xTool’s Marking Spray: My First Pro Level Coating for Glass Engraving
I finally tested my first professional laser marking spray: the xTool Glass & Metal Marking Spray. At over 40 dollars for an 8oz can, the question is simple: is it really worth it… or should you stick with cheap DIY options like tempera paint?
You know me. I like to test things that make sense for real people who build, create, and get their hands dirty. Over the past few months I have tried just about every marking trick for glass you can imagine. Moly dry lube, acrylic paint, Sharpies, chalk paint, even kids tempera paint.
And believe it or not, tempera paint came out on top. Cheap, easy to use, and it gave me that clean frosted look everyone wants. So when I came across xTool’s glass and metal marking spray, I thought, “If anyone can make a professional grade spray that actually works, it should be the company that makes the lasers themselves.”
That is what kicked off this test, my first ever pro level marking spray. It costs around 35 dollars plus shipping, and I wanted to find out if it is worth it or if the simple tempera method still wins.
The Setup
I started with the basics. I cleaned the glass with alcohol, gave the can a solid shake, and sprayed a thin even coat inside my spray booth while wearing PPE. Always use protection when spraying anything. The key is a light touch. Do not flood it. Build coverage slowly and keep the surface smooth.
The instructions from xTool are simple, but one thing matters more than the rest. Let it dry completely. By the way, once it dries you will notice that the coating scratches easily. It dries and the coating becomes a powder. Watch out how you handle the glass from this point on. I learned that the hard way after just picking it up and placing it on the laser. So, be mindful of that.
Engraving Results
For the test I used my xTool S1 40W, of course. I also tried something that a Facebook user recommended: defocusing the laser by three millimeters. That small change helps reduce micro cracks and gives a smoother finish.
When I washed the glass after engraving, I saw it right away.
The marks looked strong and crisp. The contrast on all my glasses was impressive.
Cleanup was very easy. Too easy actually. I didn’t even have to try and the powder would come off. Something to watch out for!
Durability was excellent. I scratched the test piece with a Swiss Army knife and barely left a mark.
The Verdict
The xTool Marking Spray works. No question. The engravings are clean, durable, and professional looking. But here is the tradeoff.
It is expensive, around $40 per can.
When spraying, it can get out of hand if you just press on the nozzle. You will need practice.
You need proper ventilation and gear to use it safely.
If you care about getting the best possible results and do not mind the extra cost, this spray delivers.
What’s Next
Next up is the real test. xTool Spray versus Tempera Paint. Same design, same glass, same conditions. It is the faceoff between professional convenience and do it yourself creativity.
Wish me luck!
